The GT-RNOC Convergence Innovation Platform (CIP) contains a broad set of resources with a focus on the construction of end-to-end prototype and research environments. Platform users include students and faculty with an interest in the convergence space including Voice, IMS, IPTV, Web, and mobility. This includes academic and research use from a variety of colleges and centers at Georgia Tech. Additionally the platform supports the activities of the Convergence Innovation Competition (CIC) held at Georgia Tech each Spring.

"Movue" Makes Top 200 in Android Developer Challenge 2

Movue, a student developed augmented reality (AR) application for Android, recently made the “top 200” in Android Developer Challenge 2. Movue presents business directory content with AR icons and annotations layered over the viewfinder display. Version 1.0.2 includes access to both “Yelp” and “Qype”, it enables greater personalization, and it provides rich messaging with social networks.

Movue previously earned “Best Mobile Application and Winner Overall” in GT-RNOC’s 2008/2009 Convergence Innovation Competition (CIC) in April (details and video). The April CIC win followed critical analysis by 34 invited telecom and web industry reviewers.

Student Innovators from Multiple Disciplines

As a consequence of the CIC’s history and substance, competitors have predominantly come from the “Mobile Applications and Services” track in Georgia Tech’s College of Computing (composed of 80 mostly-masters students). However students from other disciplines have made critical contributions to the CIC, they are actively invited, and their numbers are growing as new teams are being formed.

The September 28 event featured numerous student development presentations, meet-and-greet with representatives of GT-RNOC sponsors Alcatel-Lucent and Motorola, plus addresses by Peter Hill, Vice President of Architecture, Service Concepts and Video for long-time sponsor AT&T (Press Rel), Tony Lewis, Vice President of Open Development for our newest sponsor Verizon Wireless (Press Rel), and Ron Hutchins, Associate Vice Provost and Chief Technology Officer for Georgia Tech.

Sponsors & Category Definition:
GT-RNOC staff works with Category sponsors to channel the creative energies of our student innovators for maximum value. With regard to both the business and technology aspects of their competition category, sponsors may choose to a) provide more constraints, guidance, and resources to most accurately target results b) provide fewer constraints, resources, and less guidance to foster “blue sky” innovation, or c) balance “more VS less” on both the technology and business axis according to their tactical or strategic interests.

GT-RNOC Convergence Innovation Competition Kickoff Event


GT-RNOC hosted the Kickoff of the 2009-2010 Convergence Innovation Competition on September 28, 2009 from 5pm to 7pm at Technology Square Research Building (TSRB).


Over 180 Industry sponsors and guests, undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and campus partners attended!

Attendees saw exciting converged service applications developed by GT-RNOC and affiliated GT Research Centers, including winning entries from past competitions, and projects built with platform contributions from our Industry partners Alcatel-Lucent and Motorola. The event was an opportunity for students to learn more about the competition, including categories, timeilnes, and teaming.
