  • make campus services more accessible (Transportation, Dining, Library, Residence Halls, Student Center, etc)

Interactive Television

Enhancing the television user experience with interactive technologies and human convergence

This category is sponsored by the GVU Center at Georgia Tech.

Application attributes include:

  • Innovate new social and personal TV experiences
  • Integrate live and stored video with a broad set of services and user interfaces
  • Design toward IPTV platform capabilities from Motorola and other RNOC resources

Some goals for applications in this category might be:

  • Develop a prototype system that provides an ability for a user to easily access internet content related in some meaningful way to video content the user either is currently watching or has watched in the past.
  • Internet content may be viewed on the same screen used to display the video content or on a separate screen/device.
The solution may include any part of the processes of:
    • annotating the primary video content to support the identification and delivery of related internet content
    • authoring related internet content for particular video content sources
    • creating & publishing associations between video and internet content
    • aggregating, filtering or classifying related content
    • presenting secondary content or links to that content to the user.
  • Involve the delivery of internet content/communications (which may or may not involve video) to a user’s device (may or may not be the same device) in a way that leverages or adds value to the video content streamed from the CDVH.
  • Secondary content delivered to the same device as the one that displays the primary video content may be superimposed over primary content or displayed in a separate window.
  • May involve services that are delivered exclusively through the video content provider’s network (i.e. a walled garden) or that exploit an open ecosystem of secondary content providers.

SIP and Web 2.0 Converged Applications

Integrating telephony features and services with web applications and services

This category is sponsored by ATT.

Application attributes include:

  • Innovate in the convergence of Voice, Web, IPTV and more

This category is sponsored by Verizon Wireless

Application attributes include:

  • Innovate for the “Smart Grid” - both sides of the meter
  • Provide Enhanced Outage Notification
  • Monitor Power Consumption
    • utility owned - e.g. streetlights
    • consumer owned - e.g. appliances, lighting
  • Develop data analytics and visualization

Some goals of applications in this space might be:

  • to improve communication between customers and utility providers
  • to improve communication between providers and field crews
  • increase consumer awareness of power usage patterns and their impact on pricing
  • increase efficiency and responsiveness of the power generation and transport infrastructure

What is a Smart Grid?

There is a great deal of debate about the definition of the Smart Grid. While there are many different options, the important thing to recognize for the purpose of this competition is that it is a very broad space with innumerable relevant project areas.

Some commonly discussed attributes of the Smart Grid are:

  • Smart Use - Smart meters, real time pricing, demand side management, EV charging, net metering, energy efficiency, LED lighting, transaction management, energy appliances, smart homes, data centers
  • Smart Asset - Adding intelligence & control to the T&D network and components, power flow control, wind and solar integration, system protection, dynamic voltage control, improved asset utilization, energy storage, Dynamic OPF, enabling bidirectional power flows, system protection, enabling market functions
  • Proactive Response - Improved situational awareness, wide area coordination, massive data streams into actionable information, load/source forecasting and optimization, coordinated operation, operating under electrical and communications contingencies.
  • Key Technologies - Transmission & Distribution, Solar PV, Wind, DG, Energy Storage, Power Electronics, Sensors, Cyber-Security, Transaction Management, IT Infrastructure, Energy Efficiency, Smart Appliances, EV/PHEV
  • Controllable Grid - Including all of the above to make the interconnected grid controllable. This requires legislation and large scale coordination.

A great resource for more information is the Smart Grid Technologies workshop that was recently held at Georgia Tech. The presentations are available here.
